Final Evaluation

By doing research and learning how to complete an Elizabethan look, it allows me to understand more about the history of the Elizabethans and gives me ideas of how to create my own version of Elizabethan look. By developing my research, I’ve created five designs and tried the look on myself to see what works well and what doesn’t. Then, I’ve developed my final design further by experiment with different compositions, e.g. the smudging lips and eye makeup. After practicing the makeup look inside and outside the lesson, it helps me and my partner to sort out problems and understand more about each other's design. Although there were imperfections on the final makeup look that I’ve done of Mihaela’s design, I was still satisfied because I think the eyeliners look better than before and after many practices, I’ve improved and tried my best to balance the two sides of the eyeliners. For my final design, in order to improve, I think Mihaela should balance the lip shape, eye shadow and the gold lines more and the makeup she did on the final assessment day was different to my design as the gold lines wasn’t straight and it results curves instead. Also, she can try her final makeup look on herself so it will be more clearly for me to follow what she want her design to be. I think it is interesting to be the role of makeup artist doing makeup of my partner's design and also the role of designer because I’ve learnt new techniques and experience how to give and take instructions. I feel I have created a combination of traditional and contemporary Elizabethan style using my creativity and it fits in the topic ‘The New Elizabethans’ successfully.

Final assessment - Images of Mihaela Solomei's final design (MUA: Hoi Io Leong, designer and model: Mihaela Solomei)

On above is the consultation sheets that I've done for Mihaela.

This is the final makeup look of Mihaela's design that I've done on the final assessment day. I'm impressed that I was abled to complete the makeup look in time. I think the white base that I've done on that day is better that what I've done before, but I think I didn't covered the ears area with the white base very well. After a lot of practices with the eyeliners, I think I have improved drawing it but the eyeliner near the nose was still difficult for me to do and I've tried my best to get them balanced. During the assessment, Mihaela has changed her idea again and she told me to use the colour LC009 and LC010 from the lip palette instead of using the colour she told me to use before, so that's why it looks different compare to the last practice.

Final Assessment- Evaluation of my final images (Group B), [Make-up artist: Mihaela Solomei (Group A)]

Grade Given - B3

Although on the final assessment day on my makeup, the gold lines are not balanced and straight, didn't covered the white base on the neck very well, the black eye shadow and the lips shape are not balanced, but overall, I'm impressed about the final appearance of it. Because we have practiced during and outside the lesson and we have communicated with each other about the design, I think the final look was still successfully done and I was happy about it. I like the white base that Mihaela did on my face and I think the smudging red lips was done successfully as well. On the assessment day, she provided the makeup products which were used to complete the makeup look, but she forgot to bring an apron for the model (me). Also, some of her products and tools are not labelled from her kit. On the assessment day, maybe I think she was a bit nervous, she did not performed as good as the makeup look that she did when we practiced.

Final assessment - Images of my final design (MUA: Mihaela Solomei, Designer and model: Hoi Io Leong)

This is final design makeup look which was done by Mihaela Solomei. I have painted the eggshells for her to stick them on my face and the layout of the eggshells are what I want my design to be and also I think she did a great job on putting the black eye shadow around the eggshells and create the shadows for them. I think she has done well on blocking the eyebrows and also the red smudging lips for my design. For the neck area, I have told Mihaela during the practices that I've got a collar for my final shoot and she need to cover the neck with white base at least half way down the neck. But during the final assessment, she just did one thin layer of white base and blend it with the powder brush which on the photo, you can see the colour difference between the neck and the face which has got two layers of white base on. The black eye shadow, the lip shape and the gold lines are not balanced on my final look and also on my design, the gold lines go straight starting from the eyes and then extend it to the brows, but the final look that Mihaela did didn't results a straight line, it looks like curves instead which is different from my design. I think she did better when we did the practices and maybe she was worried about the timing problem during the final assessment day.

3 brushes challenge!

In lesson today, we were give a three brushes challenge and we have to create a makeup look using those brushes

On above are the three brushes that I've used to create the makeup look on below.
Brushes that I've used:
  • Buffing brush
  • A small flat and round head eye shadow brush
  • An angle brush

Firstly to start with the makeup look, I have applied the primer first with my finger and blend it on my face. Then, I have used the buffing brush to apply the foundation base, highlight, contouring and also the pink brush. After that, I have used the round head eye shadow brush for applying the orange eye shadow on my eyelids. For the angle brush, I have used it for the eye brows, the purple eye shadow on the lower lash line and the brown colour for the eyeliner. To finish the look, I have used a pale pink orangey colour for the lips and apply it with my finger so to get a nice, more natural finish.
I found the brushes that I've chosen very useful and I can use them in different situations and ways, especially I found the buffing brush the most useful because I can create a natural, simple look just using it (can use it for blusher, base, highlighter and contouring).

Final Assessment - Steps of completing Mihaela's final design

Designer and model: Mihaela Solomei and makeup artist: Hoi Io Leong
On below, I have listed the equipments that are being used and also the steps to create my partner's final design look.

Equipments:
  • Cleanser, toner, moisturizer
  • An apron
  • Cotton pads
  • Cotton buds
  • Water
  • Pritt stick
  • Metal spatula
  • Steel palette
  • Loose powder
  • A puff
  • White base
  • A foundation brush
  • Powder brushes
  • Eye shadow brushes
  • Angle brushes
  • Concealer palette
  • Eye shadow palette
  • Lip palette
  • Supra color palette
  • Pearls
  • Blush palette
Step 1: Setting up the area and get all the products ready. Ask model if she has any allergies and was she wearing contact lenses. Told the model that you are going to wash your hands before getting started. Put the apron on the model. Clip the model’s hair away from the face as not to make her hair greasy and then cleanse tone and moisturize the model’s face before applying makeup. Make sure the eyebrows are clean and dry. You can apply the toner before getting started to make sure the eyebrows are clean.
2: Use the metal spatula to scrape out some glue. Remember to apply quickly on the brows as the glue will dry quickly. Apply the glue using the metal spatula so the glue will not stick on your fingers.
3: Apply the glue on the eyebrows in opposite directions to the hair growth first and then directions to the hair growth. This will make sure all the areas on the brows are cover with glue and smooth the hairs down (making the brows go flat and smooth). Press hardly on the eyebrows with your finger following the directions of the hair growth, to make the hairs are as flat as possible. Use the cotton bud and wet it with water to remove excess glue around the eyebrows. Repeat applying the glue and press the eyebrows hardly until the hairs are as flat and as smooth as you want it to be. After completed one side of the eyebrow, do the other side as well.

4: Apply primer on the whole face and when the glue is a little bit tacky, put the colour D1 from the concealer palette to block the colours on the eyebrows.
5: Apply white base with foundation brush to the eyebrows, face, neck and ears. Use a powder brush to blend the white base nicely. Apply loose powder and press onto the whole face, neck and ears with a puff.

6. Apply contouring to the face (the colour Sage Blossom from the Kryolan- Viva brilliant color medley matt) on the forehead and under the cheekbones to form a heart shape.

7: Use the Chive Blossom from the Kryolan – Viva Color Medley Matt shadow and apply it onto the forehead underneath the blue contouring to smooth the lines and texture and blend the two colours together.

8: Apply pink blusher (Kryolan R21) on the apples of the cheeks and blend it with the blue contouring.

9. Apply the black eyeliner on the lid and extend the lines above the eyebrows (4 lines on each eye).

10: Use the duo eyelash adhesive glue and apply the pearls on the black eyeliner flick (Put the big pearls on the end of the eyeliner flicks).

11: Put three medium pearls underneath each eye and then put two small pearls under the medium pearls on each eye and after that, put one pearl under the two small pearls on each eye (forming an upside down triangle shape).

12: Mix the colour LCP653 and LC001 lip colour from the Kryolan Lip Rouge Mini palette and apply it onto the lips with an angle brush.
