 Mihaela's final design face chart

This is my first practice on my assessment partner, Mihaela's final design and in order to improve next time, I should do the black lines more evenly and balance. On that day, Mihaela has changed her idea of placing the pink colour beside the pearls, instead she asked me to put the pink colour under the pearls, forming an upside down triangle shape. she has also changed the idea and decided not to apply pink colour on her forehead blending with the blue colour. I think I should put more layers of glue onto the eyebrows as you can still see the texture of the eyebrows.

My assessment partner, Mihaela Solomei's final design and ideas

I had an interview with my partner, Mihaela Solomei and I asked questions about her final, what she want to do and also where the inspiration come from so to understand her design more and what she want me to do. On above are the questions and notes that I've written down when we have the interview.

Images from Lana del Rey's music video 'Born to die'

Her final design is inspired by 'The Darnley Portrait" and the sitter is Queen Elizabeth I of England. She has chosen a photo of a famous singer and songwriter Lana del Rey as the contemporary inspiration for her design. On her design, she want to create the white complexion which is one of the basic elements on the Elizabethan look. She has designed a heart-shaped contouring on the forehead which links to the heart shape hairstyle that the Elizabethans had. The blue colour from the forehead extend to under the cheekbones and she added pink colour on the forehead to blend the blue and pink colour together to smooth the edges and texture of them. The reason she has chosen the blue colour for contouring and heart shape is because it is inspired by the blue roses on Lana del Reys's head in the image from above and also because the colour blue means conservative, reliable and trustworthy which reflect the qualities and essence of Queen Elizabeth I. She has included a darker pink blusher in order to reflect the Elizabethan rosy cheeks. She has chosen a red lip colour for her design as it is one of the iconic elements of the Elizabethan look and Lana Del Rey as well. For the eye makeup, she has designed four eyeliner which goes above the eyebrows and at the end of each lines, she has put pearls to symbolize the illusion of a crown and royalty. Underneath the eye, she has put more pearls to symbolise purity which also links to Queen Elizabeth I.The image from above shows Lana del Rey is wearing a long white dress and the colour white in Elizabethan era symbolise purity. The two tigers on the sides are used to power and confidence and also the candles at the background are gold in colour which shows a symbol of wealth.

Steps of completing my final design and practice my final design look

Model and designer: Hoi Io Leong (me), makeup artist: Mihaela Solomei
Equipments:
  • Cleanser, toner, moisturizer
  • An apron
  • Sectioning clips
  • Water
  • Cotton pads
  • Cotton buds
  • A metal spatula
  • A steel palette
  • Matte primer
  • White base
  • Loose powder
  • A pritt stick
  • A foundation brush

  • Eye shadow brushes
  • Disposable mascara
  • A sponge
  • A puff
  • Eyelash glue
  • Supracolor palette
  • Eye shadow palette
  • Lip palette
  • Eggshells

Before

Step 1: Setting up the area and get all the products ready. Ask model if she has any allergies and was she wearing contact lenses. Told the model that you are going to wash your hands before getting started. Put the apron on the model. Clip the model’s hair away from the face as not to make her hair greasy and then cleanse tone and moisturize the model’s face before applying makeup. Make sure the eyebrows are clean and dry. You can apply the toner before getting started to make sure the eyebrows are clean.

2: Use the metal spatula to scrape out some glue. Remember to apply quickly on the brows as the glue will dry quickly. Apply the glue using the metal spatula so the glue will not stick on your fingers. Apply the glue on the eyebrows in opposite directions to the hair growth first and then directions to the hair growth. This will make sure all the areas on the brows are cover with glue and smooth the hairs down (making the brows go flat and smooth). Press hardly on the eyebrows with your finger following the directions of the hair growth, to make the hairs are as flat as possible. Use the cotton bud and wet it with water to remove excess glue around the eyebrows. Repeat applying the glue and press the eyebrows hardly until the hairs are as flat and as smooth as you want it to be. After completed one side of the eyebrow, do the other side as well.

3: When the glue is a little bit tacky, apply powder and press on top of it with a puff. Apply white base with foundation brush to the eyebrows, face, neck and ears. Use a powder brush to blend the white base nicely. Apply loose powder onto the whole face, neck and ears.

4. Use the gold colour on the supracolor palette and apply it from the inner eye and extend the line to the eyebrow with an angle brush.

5. Powder around the eyes to avoid eye shadow drop onto the eye bags.

6. Apply the black eye shadow onto the eyelid and also the lower lash line with an eye shadow brush. Blend the edges of the eye shadow. Brush away the loose powder on the eye bags.

7. Apply the red colour on the lip palette using an angle brush. Dip some red lipstick onto the sides of the lips and blend the colour out with a sponge. Apply the black colour from the supracolor palette onto the inner lips and blend nicely with the red colour.

8. Get some white colour from the supra colour onto the steel palette and get some white colour onto the disposable mascara. Apply it onto the lashes to create white eyelashes.

 9. Get the eggshells which are painted with white colour already and stick them onto the left side of the face using the eyelash glue. After that, apply black eye shadow around some of the eggshells.

Finish

Mihaela practiced my final design in lesson and on above, I have documented the steps of how to create my final design look. I'm impressed about the final look that she has done for me here.

Mihaela practicing my final design in lesson

Before
After

In lesson, Mihaela has practiced my final design on me and I think the smudging lips work better than last time and same as the black eye shadow around the eggshells. In order to improve next time, I have told Mihaela to put more small eggshells on my face as I think the eggshells on my face are all quite big this time. Also, I think she should put more white base on my face so to block the colour on my brows and my face better.

This is the first practice that Mihaela did my design on me. In order to improve next time, I have told Mihaela to try not to get too much black eye shadow on top of the eggshells and also to use an angle brush to create the shadows to make them look more natural and three-dimensional. Also, for the lips, because I think the sizes of the smudging effects look similar, so I have told her to do a bigger size on the eggshells side like my face chart, while the other side do a smaller size of smudging effects to create a more natural finish. I'm happy about this practice look and I think she has done a good job on the eye makeup and it is the effects that I want for my design.

Trailer of 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'

The film 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' is directed by Shekhar Kapur and produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. The screenplay was written by Michael Hirst and William Nicholson. Cate Blanchett is on the role of Queen Elizabeth I of England and the film is about the romantic disappointments of Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh, the invasion of the Spanish Armada, betrayal by Elizabeth's cousin Mary Stuart and how Elizabeth secure her position of being Queen of England. In the film, Blanchett (Elizabeth) wears many different outfits and the costumes were created by Alexandra Byrne. The film won an Academy Award for Best Costume and was nominated for BAFTA of Best Costume, Makeup, Production Design and Actress in a Leading Role. On below are some of the pictures from the film and you can see Blanchett wore many different outfits.

The makeup look of Blanchett (Elizabeth I) kept simple in the film and the makeup didn't changed as much. The features of the Elizabethans of pale white complexion, thin arched eyebrows, rosy cheeks and lips were seen in the film.

    My final design
On above, I have found a photo of a scene from the film of Elizabeth I which I think links to my final design makeup look. By the use of white complexion on the face, it symbolizes wealth, purity and beauty during the Elizabethan era. I have used gold colour on my makeup look which shows power and wealth and also links to the photo above where Elizabeth is wearing a dress decorated with gold beads. The eyebrows are barely invisible which also related to my makeup as I have used white base to block the colour of the brows.

Final Design Look (Facechart and practicing on myself)

    Final design face chart
I have gathered the ideas and the developments that I've done from the previous posts and I have created my final face chart on above.

Me with my final design look

I am happy about the final makeup look that I have applied on myself (pictures on above). I think the eggshells work well on my face and also I like how the eggshells are not totally covered with white colour, leaving some original colour of the eggshells which looks like my skin tone. It works even better as the eggshells are used to create a cracking and damage skin effects. I like how I used the white skin, black and gold eye shadow to symbolise wealth and nobility within the makeup. I think the smudging lips work well and I like how I have put the red lipstick more around the side of the lips and blend it out to create a softer texture. On the eggshells, I have used black eye shadow to create the shadows around some parts of the eggshells to give a three-dimensional effects. I like the idea of using white lashes and the colour stands out from the black eye shadow which makes the design more unique. In order to improve, I should put the white base thicker to cover the colour of the eyebrows better.
