Historical Elizabethan Make-up Application (Eyebrows)

Equipments:

  • Cleanser, toner, moisturizer
  • Cotton pads
  • Cotton buds
  • Soap (unscented for sensitive skin)
  • Pritt stick
  • Warm water
  • Metal spatula
  • Steel palette
  • Rich liquid foundation (White base)
  • Loose powder
  • A puff
  • A foundation brush
  • A angle brush
  • Supracolor palette
  • Disposable mascara
  • Blush palette
  • Blush brush
Using the pritt stick:

Step 1: Set up the area and get all the products ready. Ask model if she has any allergies and was she wearing contact lenses. Told your model that you are going to wash your hands before getting started. Put the apron on the model. Clip the model’s hair away from the face as not to make her hair greasy and then cleanse tone and moisturize the model’s face before applying makeup.

2: Make sure the eyebrows are clean and dry. You can apply the toner before getting started to make sure the eyebrows are clean.
3: Use the metal spatula to scrape out some glue and put it on the back of your hand. Remember to apply quickly on the brows as the glue will dry quickly. Apply the glue using the metal spatula so the glue will not stick on your fingers.
4: Apply the glue on the eyebrows in opposite directions to the hair growth first and then directions to the hair growth. This will make sure all the areas on the brows are cover with glue and smooth the hairs down (making the brows go flat and smooth). Press hardly on the eyebrows with your finger following the directions of the hair growth, to make the hairs are as flat as possible.
5: Repeat applying the glue and press the eyebrows hardly until the hairs are as flat and as smooth as you want it to be. Use the cotton bud and wet it with water to remove excess glue around the eyebrows.
6: Because the pritt stick is smooth, it gives a shiny effect under the makeup so in order to avoid this happen, when the glue is a little bit tacky, apply powder and press on top of it with a puff.
Step 7: Apply the rich liquid foundation (white base) to cover the colours on the eyebrows.
Using soap:
Step 1: Make sure the eyebrows are clean and dry. You can apply the toner before getting started to make sure the eyebrows are clean.

2: Soak the soap in warm water and rub the angle brush over the soap in circular motion to create thick cream paste on the brush. Get some soap on the back of your hand and start applying it onto the brows in opposite directions of the hair growth first and then directions to the hair growth (Backwards and forwards).

3: Press hardly on the eyebrows with your finger following the directions of the hair growth, to make the hairs are as flat as possible.
4: Repeat the same steps (applying the soap and press hardly across the eyebrows) until the hairs on the brows are smooth and lies flat to the skin.
5: Use a cotton bud to remove any excess soap around the eyebrows with water.
6: Apply the rich liquid foundation (White base) to cover the colours on the eyebrows.

White Eyelashes
Scrape some white colour from the supracolor palette on the back of your hand and you can wet the white colour with alcohol or water. Put the disposable mascara in it and go through the eyelashes.

For natural skin colour
Use the rosey pink colour from the supracolor palette to cover the colours on the eyebrows because it takes out dark colours. Use a sponge or a soft brush to stipple the colour on the eyebrows (no rubbing!). Then cover the colour by stippling the foundation base (Try to match the colour of the model’s skin tone).

Red cheeks
Use the red colour blush and apply it to the apples of the cheeks (not on cheekbones) as Elizabethan makeup just apply on the apples of the cheeks.

Thoughts about the lesson:
Before I have learnt the techniques of blocking the colours on the eyebrows in this lesson, I didn’t know that people block the colours on the eyebrows using pritt stick and soap and I think it is very interesting. In this lesson, I have experimented with the two different methods (using soap and pritt stick) and I prefer the pritt stick one as it is faster and easier to get the brows hairs lie flat and smooth while using soap, I need to do at least 5 times to get the brows hairs as smooth and as flat as I want it to be. In order to improve next time, I should balance the red colours on the cheeks more and apply the rich liquid foundation thicker to cover the colours on the face properly.

I found these looks very inspiring and unique because of how Mcqueen uses cans and different materials to create the hairstyles.

Although this makeup look hasn't got the hairstyles and the red cheeks that the Elizabethans had. But for me, is definitely link to the Elizabethans as it features red lips, alabaster skin and also the way the makeup artists block the colours on the eyebrows. I have found this makeup look very unique as the models feature huge glossy lips which is different from the beauty standards of what we think from nowadays. In my opinion, I think maybe the makeup artists want to express and show the ideas that Elizabethans' standard of beauty is very different to us. I like the way how the models has got white eyelashes as well which makes the lashes not visible under the alabaster skin.

Carina Buckley Analytical Review - The Danger Dress

In lesson, we have given a task to write a review for a blog post and on below is the link and also the photos from the blog.

Photos:

 photo sc9_zps6e6cc496.jpg
 photo sc4_zpsc9d27816.jpg
 photo sc6_zpsbc83a758.jpg

The title of the blog post is 'Where Have All The Surfing Cowboys Gone' and at the bottom of the post, there is a paragraph of text which the blogger has written about her post.

'How to make body conscious look fresh: generic slip-ons from Harajuku and some of that pale Venice Blvd. sunshine. Plus Friend of Mine just does it right in the first place. Called the Danger dress for a reason, careful how you walk in this one..'

Although I like the photos on the post but when the first time I read this blog post, I'm a bit confused as I have no idea why the blogger had named the post 'Where Have All The Surfing Cowboys Gone' and also what was the post about. I think the blogger should have added more informations and wrote more about the concept and her feelings about the photographs. On the photos, there is a girl wearing a white short dress and a pair of white slip-ons. She was posing at the front and also against the blue wall with the words 'Surfing Cowboys' written on it. I like the way the photographer capture the photos and also the lightings give me a very summery mood. I especially like the last photo as it creates depth of field effects and the way the model was posing against the wall.

On below, I have written a paragraph using the photos from the blogger and thinking if this post were mine, how will I describe the post.

My blog post

Hi guys! :D Today, I was wearing my white outfit which I recommend for all the girls who were aiming for a fresh summer look. The reason I call this 'The Danger Dress' is because as all of you knows, wearing all white outfit needs to be careful as it will get dirty easily. I love this outfit as it is comfortable to wear and looks very casual.

The weather was very nice today so I have decided to walk around Venice Blvd and I saw a blue wall with the words 'Surfing Cowboys' written on a wall which I really like. I also like the typography and the colours of the words on the wall and then, I started to think it will be nice for me to shoot a few photographs here with my white outfit. After that, I was thinking what poses I should do for the shoot, so I have come up an idea that because on the blue wall, it says 'Surfing Cowboys', but there wasn't any there, so I wanted to pose like I was looking for the surfing cowboys. I'm happy about the results of the photos and I think my white outfit and white slip-ons from Harajuku, also suits the theme of the background because the whole style looks sporty and summery.

Thankyou for checking out my blog post and have a great day guys! \(^V^)/

Symbolism within Queen Elizabeth I's Portraits

In lessons, we have discussed symbolism within Elizabethans portraits and on below I have explained the symbolism within Queen Elizabeth I's portraits.
File:Elizabeth I Rainbow Portrait.jpg
The Rainbow Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I
c.1600-1602
Attributed to Issac Oliver (1556-1617)
Oil on canvas
127 × 99.1 cm (50 × 39 in)

I found this portrait very interesting as you can see there are eyes and ears drew on the cloak and this symbolise that Elizabeth I sees and also hears what's happening and what's going on in her kingdom (wars). On her sleeve, it is decorated with serpent which is a symbol of wisdom. There is a heart-shaped ruby within the serpent's mouth and the ruby presents Elizabeth I's heart. The reason why the ruby (Elizabeth's heart) is in the serpent's mouth is because it symbolise how Elizabeth's heart was controlled by her wisdom. Elizabeth's right hand holds an image of a rainbow and it symbolise a latin phrase ' Non sine sole iris' and in English is 'No rainbow without the sun' which presents there will be peace as long as Elizabeth I rules the kingdom. The dress is decorated with spring flowers which allows Elizabeth to portray Astraea.

The rainbow portrait was drawn when Elizabeth was about 60 years old and as you can see, she still looks very young and ageless which shows her image of being a 'Fairy Queen'. The crescent shaped jewel that Elizabeth wore around the neck which represents goddess of the moon, symbolise feminine authority within the portrait.

The Ermine Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I
c.1585
By Nicholas Hilliard
http://www.gogmsite.net/_Media/1585-elizabeth-ermine-portr-2.jpeg
Elizabeth I likes black, white, red and gold colour because it symbolise her status. The ermine on the portrait is a symbol of royalty and chastity and in the portrait, the ermine wears a golden crown on its neck which presents purity and majesty. The olive branch that Elizabeth holds symbolise peace and the sword on the table represents justice. The dark background stands out the black and the expensive golden work, beads and gems on the gown that Elizabeth wears in the portrait. Elizabeth wears the 'Three Brothers' jewel which was one of her favourite jewels. It is a gem that made of three diamonds with a triangle shape. Big gowns in Elizabethan era symbolise high status, wealth and also symbol of purity.

Sieve Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I
1583
Oil on panel
By Quentin Metsys the Younger

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Metsys_Elizabeth_I_The_Sieve_Portrait_c1583.jpg
In this portrait, Queen Elizabeth is holding a sieve which symbolise purity and chastity and also presents Elizabeth's image as the 'Virgin Queen'. The black and white colour on Elizabeth clothes emphasise her positions of power and because black fabric and blackwork were so expensive in the Elizabethan era, it also shows the high status and wealth throughout the portrait. On the globe behind Elizabeth on the right, the ships are crossing west which symbolise England's conquest of the New world and the globe is often used in a portrait to show defeated countries or the allies of the British empire. The column in the background of the portrait was adorned with golden imperial crown at it's base which symbolise Elizabeth's majesty. The roundels depict the story of Aeneas and Dido. Queen Elizabeth is often compared to the character of Aeneas because although Elizabeth has been tempted by marriage, but she refuses at the end and being a strong female figure who rules her kingdom.

The Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I
circa. 1588
by an unknown artist

This portrait was painted when Elizabeth was around 55 years old and she still looks youthful. She poses powerfully and the big clothes symbolise the wealth, high status and purity. In the portrait, the pearls that Elizabeth wears is Robert Dudley's last gift to Elizabeth and it has a very special meaning to her. The pearls symbolise purity and wealth in the Elizabethan era. This portrait also features the globe as well, like 'the Sieve Portrait'. But this time, Elizabeth's hand is on the globe and her fingers are extending to other parts of the globe which symbolises that Elizabeth's power is far reaching.

The egg shaped object in front of the window symbolise rebirth, fertility, eternal life, prosperity, generosity and union. Outside the windows are the scene where on the left window is the arrival of the Armada and on the right window is the defeat of the Armada. This portrait could also been seen to describe Elizabeth's success at protecting the nation from Spanish invasion. The crown on the left of the portrait symbolise royalty and majesty. The large bows on Elizabeth's clothes symbolise virginity in this portrait.

The Tudor rose
The Tudor rose was also a common thing that the Queen Elizabeth I used in the portrait. It symbolises virginity which also related to the Virgin Mary.

Thom Browne in New York Fashion week Spring/Summer 2014

Thom Browne

Thom Browne is an American fashion designer and on below are the photos of his collections in New York Fashion week Spring/Summer 2014 which his themes are based on the 'Elizabethans clown'. I found the styles very interesting and chic but it also scare me a bit. (-_-)'

http://www4.pictures.stylebistro.com/it/Thom+Browne+Spring+2014+Details+xDwpwtL1RWPl.jpg

The makeup looks are definitely related to the Elizabethans as it features the white skin, red lips and also light and thin eyebrows. It looks like a modern Elizabethans for me because of the heavy eye makeup and the bold red smudged lips which gives a more creepy look. The collar on the image above reminds me of the ruff that the Elizabethans wore although it is not around the whole neck.

http://www.thegloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Thom-Browne-15.jpg

The looks also features frizzy and big hairstyles which links to the Elizabethans. I like how the hairstyles look messy, highlight with white colour and it adds a more modern and crazy effects to the whole styles. For the hair design, the models also got a caul attached to their hair and a caul is one of the main headdresses Elizabethans wore at that period of time. The caul also attached and decorated with pearls on the models which also links to women in Elizabethan era as pearls symbolised purity and virginity.

Contemporary makeup of Elizabethans - Alex Box's works

http://s3.media.squarespace.com/production/778371/10360678/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/SOMESLASHTHINGS-CHAPTER004-LAUNCH-EVENT-SOMESLASHTHINGS-SECRET-031-ALEX-BOX.jpg
Alex Box is one of the makeup artist from the Illamasqua art team and I love how she created very  dramatic makeup looks. With her background in fine art, she created looks which is unique and also I love how her works take makeup to a whole new level.

On below are Alex Box's works which related to the Elizabethans.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjreXTdSZ-d2BZ2JYDP0RJwjWmehmEXjV_2jwqNZBDIU7lEnNanxGQaUa7teICFNeZXsyvu_9xR6ThPUw1Y0oQXqrlwX_MgkZjvFoFYTjgUeINDvceJSDmCiAMhy53MatXoXTYuQq2bJJM/s1600/170-alex-box-007rgbfinal.jpg
I found this makeup look very interesting as it involves photoshop effects (the melting effects and also the hair of the model) and for me, I think it looks like a modern, fashionable Elizabethan woman who looks feminine in the image. It links to the Elizabethans because of the white skin, red lips and also having no eyebrows.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAkVnJxmFQ90aZ09jItI5hdvoKwSNx56ohDee0rv4xAY-xNycjQwl5_-CKi1XEGc2afqg2jbN2Y4glEvcuUhzanttQfYQ1U705jwYysQeZfZ4oJRjD7q9D5llnrFaUIBhSZJ8HVerLPm5G/s640/alex+box+llamasqua+makeup+artist+mua.jpg
Although Alex Box's makeup idea for this look comes from the 1920s but for me, it has got the features of the Elizabethans as well because with the red lips, white skin and also blocking the colours of the eyebrows. I think this makeup look show a very feminine style but also it gives me a feeling of being a Queen (like Queen Elizabeth I) because the way the model was posing in the photo confidently which gives a powerful and strong mood.

Val Garland

Val Garland is a makeup artist working in London and I'm really appreciated by what she said on below.
http://showstudio.com/img/contributors/401-600/438_320c.jpg?1315920512
Val Garland
“I’m not afraid; I don’t mind if I’m wrong. I was a skinhead, a punk, and a New Romantic – I belonged to so many different tribes when I was growing up. I’ve always been a rebel, so if something’s wrong then I’m going to like it. There’s something about England that makes you not afraid to take a risk.”
She worked on Alexander McQueen's early collections and is now working for Vivienne Westwood at the backstage. She worked with many famous models and celebrities such as Kate Moss and Taylor Swift, etc. On below is a makeup look Val Garland created and it is inspired by the look which she has done for London based designer Mary Katrantzou's AW14 runway show.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B0-IWGPCIAABx1E.jpg:large
On this makeup look, Garland has used the products from M.A.C.She created many freckles all over the face and I like how she created a more real look and include the freckles in a fashion photography rather than cover up the imperfections on the face. She has dyed the eyebrows blonde and I like the red lips and the natural russet colour on the cheeks which makes the whole makeup look more feminine and fresh.

Val Garland: amplified realness

http://38.media.tumblr.com/8f5795aafdaf4ba98c653b94f378e2d9/tumblr_mvd5coZB9b1rvfwpho1_400.jpg
This is another makeup look that Val Garland did Vivienne Westwood's makeup for M.A.C. I like this makeup look because it attracts me by the use of colours on the eyes. I also like how the white complexion stands out the orange, red, gold and purple colours on the face and create colour contrasts within the makeup look.
